JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Digital security statistics showed a breach occurs somewhere in the world every 39 seconds. Now, students in the Jackson-metro are learning about cybersecurity and beyond.

Tougaloo College received a $1 million grant from Google to establish the Cybersecurity Clinic, which was unveiled on Friday, October 4.

The goal of the clinic is to educate local, small businesses and other organizations about defending against online threats. Tougaloo College was chosen as one of four institutions across the nation to be funded by Google.

“It will work like a medical school or law school when they provide pro bono services for underserved communities. So, we’ll be doing the same type of thing with cybersecurity, and we want to educate the public. We will be targeting specifically churches, small businesses, schools, so that we can educate them on what’s going on with cybersecurity,” said Professor Sharron Streeter.

Research showed that digital security will be one of the highest paid career fields in the next two years.
