PEARL, Miss. (WJTV) – A man who fled from an accident in Pearl has died after being transported to a local hospital, authorities said.
Pearl police said the crash occurred in the 2300 block of Highway 468 just after 11:15 p.m. on October 10.
When officers arrived at the location, they said a man ran from the scene of the accident and towards an officer’s patrol vehicle. The man was ordered to the ground, and police said he complied.
Police located an unconscious female passenger inside the wrecked vehicle. She had severe head trauma. Investigators said the man who had fled the accident scene went into cardiac arrest, and medical personnel started CPR.
The man and the woman were both transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) for treatment. The man died at the hospital.
“The Pearl Police Department is aware of irresponsible social media reports claiming that the Officers ‘kneeled on his neck.’ This incident has been reviewed by Administration and these claims are completely fabricated. This entire incident was captured on body and dash cameras. The individuals responsible for these outlandish claims should be ashamed of themselves for taking a tragic death, horrific scene, and using it to cause irreparable harm to the community/police relationship,” police said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
