JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson leaders announced Thalia Mara Hall is expected to reopen early next year.

On Monday, city leaders said they expect Thalia Mara Hall to reopen on January 18, 2025.

Crews are still working to fix the issues at the facility. In early August, the city was forced to close Thalia Mara Hall after “early microbial activity” was discovered following a recent malfunction with the HVAC controller in the facility.

According to the report by the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO), mold was found in the facility, and human waste was found on the balcony. The report also found that some fire extinguishers were not up to date. The city submitted an action plan to fix the issues found in the report.

According to city officials, crews are working to address the issue that caused the mold in the first place. They said an air-conditioning system and a new chiller have been purchased, and the new chiller is currently operational. Another chiller is expected to be brought to the facility.

Officials said asbestos and lead were also discovered at Thalia Mara Hall during the remediation process. They’re working to replace the fire curtain due to asbestos. The curtain has been in place for 65 years and is obsolete, according to officials.

City leaders also said there are significant leaks in the facility’s roof that they’re working to fix. They said the roof will be repaired during the remediation process.
