JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson family is now without a home after an alleged arson.
Officials with the Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area said they were notified about suspicious activity around the home on Hite Street. They said there had been ongoing issues with the current tenant and other people staying at the home.
The fire happened around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 23. Officials with the Jackson Fire Department (JFD) said no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.
“Habitat homeowners this morning told me they saw the men who were asked to leave, come back, knock out the windows and set the house on fire. So, they lost what little they had. They’re safe, and we now have a burned out Habitat House because Habitat now owns the house, owned the house,” said Merrill McKewen, executive director for Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area.
Patrick Armon, assistant fire chief for JFD, said investigators suspect the cause of the fire was arson.
