SIMPSON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A Simpson County coach has been charged with two counts of sexual battery.
Simpson County deputies said Sammy Byther was arrested on October 31 following a probable cause hearing on October 30.
Investigators said the arrest stemmed from an October 5 complaint made by a student at Mendenhall High School. According to deputies, the complaint alleged inappropriate communication between Byther, a wrestling coach, and a student.
Authorities said evidence was brought forward to support at least two counts of sexual battery against Byther. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and Byther turned himself into the sheriff’s office.
Byther is currently being held at the Simpson County Adult Detention Center. He appeared in court on November 1, and his bond was set at $2 million.
