JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A man died after he was buried under hot asphalt in Jackson.

The incident occurred at AJ Materials in the 1000 block of East McDowell Road around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 4.

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said it appears there was a malfunction with the man’s vehicle. Wade said Darrell Sheriff, 41, was underneath his dump truck trying to repair a hydraulic line when the tailgate opened and released asphalt on top of him.

Sheriff died at the scene. Wade said officers will conduct a death investigation, but Sheriff’s death appears to be accidental.
