BLOG: 2024 Election updates in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Tuesday is Election Day in Mississippi, and WJTV 12 News is prepared to keep you updated on the congressional election results.

10:09PM (Tuesday) – Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson won reelection to a U.S. House seat representing Mississippi on Tuesday. Thompson defeated Republican Ron Eller, a military veteran and physician assistant. Thompson served as Bolton mayor and Hinds County supervisor before he won a 1993 special election to represent western Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes most of Jackson. He is the only Democrat in Mississippi’s congressional delegation. Thompson is a previous chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and is now the ranking member. He chaired the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

9:05PM (Tuesday) – Republican Rep. Trent Kelly won reelection to a U.S. House seat representing Mississippi on Tuesday. Kelly defeated a Democratic challenger, businesswoman Dianne Dodson Black, in a rematch of the 2022 election in northern Mississippi’s 1st District. Kelly is a former district attorney and has been in the House since winning a 2015 special election. Kelly is a major general in the Mississippi Army National Guard and deployed twice to Iraq. He is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Agriculture Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

8:54PM (Tuesday) – Republican Rep. Mike Ezell won reelection to a U.S. House seat representing Mississippi on Tuesday. Ezell defeated Craig Raybon, a Democrat who has worked as a nonprofit director and truck driver. Ezell worked more than 42 years in law enforcement, including eight years as Jackson County sheriff, before he was first elected in south Mississippi’s 4th Congressional District in 2022. He is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee. He campaigned on opposing abortion, supporting veterans and securing the U.S. border with Mexico.

7:20PM (Tuesday) – Republican Rep. Michael Guest won reelection to a U.S. House seat representing Mississippi on Tuesday. Guest was unopposed this year in the primary and general election in central Mississippi’s 3rd District. He is a former district attorney who was first elected to the U.S. House in 2018. He is chairman of the House Ethics Committee, vice chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and a member of the House Appropriations Committee. Guest is also a member of the Prayer Caucus and the Pro-Life Caucus and has received support from the National Rifle Association.

7:01PM (Tuesday) – Republican Sen. Roger Wicker won reelection to a U.S. Senate seat representing Mississippi on Tuesday. Wicker defeated Democrat Ty Pinkins, an attorney. Wicker is an attorney and served in the state Senate of Mississippi before winning a U.S. House seat in 1994. He has been in the U.S. Senate since 2007, when he was appointed after the resignation of Republican Trent Lott. Wicker is the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee and a senior member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. He has pushed to expand shipbuilding for the military.

7:01PM (Tuesday) – Former President Donald Trump won Mississippi on Tuesday, claiming the state’s six electoral votes and continuing a long winning streak for Republicans. The last Democratic presidential nominee to win Mississippi was Jimmy Carter in 1976. Republicans hold both of Mississippi’s U.S. Senate seats, three of its four U.S. House seats, all eight statewide offices and a wide majority in the state House and Senate. Gov. Tate Reeves and most other Republican officials in Mississippi endorsed Trump, while Democratic U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson endorsed the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris.
