JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The family of Dexter Wade are still searching for answers nearly two years after his death.
Wednesday marked Dexter Wade Day in Jackson. Last year, Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, declared November 20 as a day of dedication to Wade.
Bettersten Wade, Dexter Wade’s mother, said the unanswered questions surrounding her son’s death is what pushes her to continue the fight for justice. She rallied with other family members outside the Jackson Police Department (JPD).
Officials said Dexter Wade had been hit by a Jackson police cruiser in March 2023 and later buried in a pauper’s field in Hinds County. Bettersten Wade said she did not know that he was deceased until August 2023.
No arrests have been made in the case. Bettersten Wade said her son’s death was a coverup.
“I haven’t heard anything about no charges brought against nobody. They’re just accepting it as an accident. But when it’s an accident, if I hit somebody, I am going to stop. I’m not going to amputate his leg. I’m not going to break every bone in his body,” she said.
During a news conference on Wednesday, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade expressed his condolences to the Wade family.
“As I took the helm of June 1, 2023, I wanted to make sure that no other family experienced that trauma. What I did, I updated and created new policies within the Jackson Police Department,” said Wade.
The police chief said JPD created a media release policy and updated the missing persons policy. Wade said JPD is working with the Department of Justice to help the department revise current policies and with training moving forward.
