JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – According to a report by ESPN, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opened an investigation into an allegation that Jackson State University (JSU) football players and coaches had access to game-week practice film of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB).
The allegation was made on October 31, two days before JSU played UAPB in Jackson. The Tigers defeated the Golden Lions 41-3.
ESPN reported that “a UAPB player informed the coaching staff he was told by a Jackson State player that Tigers defensive players were in the Jackson State team facility watching practice film of UAPB from that week. After receiving this information, UAPB coach Alonzo Hampton logged into the software program the team uses to upload and review practice footage and saw that it had been accessed by the account of a former walk-on who had been cut in the spring, sources said. The IP address connected to the account when it accessed the practice video was assigned to Clinton, Mississippi, a town that neighbors Jackson.”
WJTV 12 News reached out to JSU about the SWAC’s investigation. Officials with the university said, “We are aware of the allegations brought to the attention of the conference. After working with the conference office and having full transparency into our program, no violations were found, and the matter was closed.”
However, a SWAC spokesperson told ESPN that the investigation remained open after the conference received new information into the matter. JSU officials said they’re standing by their statement and that there has been no wrongdoing.
JSU clinched a spot in the SWAC Championship after defeating Alabama State 16-10. The championship game will be held at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson on December 7.
