MADISON, Miss. (WJTV) – Thanksgiving is almost here, and families across the Jackson metro are grabbing what they need to make their holiday meals.

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Thanksgiving Dinner Survey, the classic feast for 10 will cost you $58.08, which is down 5% from 2023. However, shoppers are still feeling the burn.

“This impacted everybody. I’m noticing everything is exorbitantly more expensive than it was at one point. And, you know, we just work with it, and God makes a way. But, of course, it’s a challenge,” said Jon Dubard, a Mississippi shopper.

Some stores are offering deals throughout the holiday season. James Smith, the district manager at the Kroger in Madison, said they pride themselves in low prices of high quality.

“Our stores have been very busy, and we’re offering low prices on many Thanksgiving staple items. Items such as turkeys, yams,” he said.

Some shoppers are putting their spin on holiday traditions.

“I’m back here at home visiting family, and my grandparents are coming to town. We like to incorporate some coastal food into our traditional Thanksgiving food. So, I did a little shopping for my mom today, so I got to see the total bill price. So, it was a little bit steep,” said Rachel Staehling, a Mississippi shopper.

Smith said they believe in making Thanksgiving enjoyable by helping to meet the needs of each family.

“The price is different. It just all depends on what your budget look like. But we cater to all our people, so we can make whatever you want your dinner to look like. We can make it work for you,” he said.

Even though the price tag for this year’s Thanksgiving meal is down 5%, the AFBF said it’s still up nearly 20% from just five years ago.
