MAGEE, Miss. (WJTV) – A pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle in Magee.

The incident occurred on Highway 49 South near the VFW on Friday, November 29.

According to police, the unidentified driver initially left the scene, believing he had struck a deer. Police said the driver did return to the scene as officers arrived and was distraught when he realized it was a person.

Investigators said there was no alcohol in the driver’s system, and they determined that Douglas Lee Huffman, 36, of Florence, was sitting in the middle of a lane before he was hit. Police said the Simpson County 911 Emergency Center received a call prior to the collision about a person walking in the middle of the highway.

The investigation is ongoing.
