JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with the Jackson Fire Department (JFD) want neighbors to stay safe following several house fires in the city.

Deputy Fire Chief Cleotha Sanders said it’s best to formulate a home fire escape plan in case of an emergency. He said fire extinguisher training is available.

According to Sanders, JFD sees an increase in fires when the winter months approach. If you’re using a space heater to stay warm, you should keep three-feet of clearance around the heater.

Smoke alarms are also offered free of charge.

“Our goal is to ensure that people are educated with regard to fire safety, and we just want our community to reach out to us. We have working smoke alarms that our educators will come out and install at no charge to our residents. We’ve been partnered with the American Red Cross for a number of years, who provide the smoke alarms,” said Sanders.

Jackson neighbors who need smoke alarms can contact 601-960-1399.
