Ridgeland officer shoots suspect after being hit by car

RIDGELAND, Miss. (WJTV) – A Ridgeland police officer shot a suspect after the officer was hit by a vehicle, officials said.

The shooting occurred at the Renaissance at Colony Park on Tuesday, December 31.

Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said Ridgeland police were conducting surveillance on a vehicle. According to management with the Renaissance at Colony Park, police had located a stolen vehicle near Barnes and Noble.

When the officer attempted to approach the vehicle, Martin said the suspect drove towards an officer. The officer was struck by the stolen vehicle, according to officials with the shopping center.

The officer fired his weapon, striking the unidentified driver. Officials said the driver struck other vehicles in the area and fled the scene. According to Martin, the suspect led officers on a brief chase on Interstate 220 before the vehicle came to a stop. The suspect received non-life threatening injuries.

Martin said the officer also sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Madison police, Madison County deputies, U.S. Marshals and Jackson police also responded to the incident.

Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the shooting and will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
