GREENE COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Greene County deputies are searching for the suspect accused of killing three people at a gas station on New Year’s Day.
The town of State Line has been shaken to its core after the deadly shooting at Clarke’s Exxon gas station on Wednesday, January 1.
Deputies said the suspect is considered to be armed and dangerous. They do not believe he’s still in Greene County.
“I do not think that he’s a threat right here in town. I don’t even think he’s going to be out here in town. But we are keeping, as you say, his patrol car driving by. We’re keeping a heavy presence of the public is worried, and I understand that,” said Greene County Deputy Brad Warrick.
Investigators said the unidentified suspect killed store clerk Rhonda Denson; her boyfriend, Lester Campbell; and a customer, Jason Thornton. Law enforcement officials are working to determine if the homicide was a robbery gone wrong or if Denson was targeted.
“There are some things it doesn’t make sense right now to us that we’re we’re actively investigating by looking at how this took place and intent that went into this thing. You know, it looks more to me than more than just a robbery,” said Warrick.
Neighbors are still reeling over the tragic loss. They want the suspect caught.
“It’s about the first time we’ve had anything like this happen. So hopefully, this be the last. But right now, we’re just hoping that they catch the one that done it and get them off the streets before he does somebody else the same way, because he literally didn’t have any respect for human life,” said Terry Young, a State Line resident.
Three black bows were placed on a wooden cross in the center of the town in honor of the victims.
“It’s unbelievable that somebody would go in there and take someone’s life over something so mediocre as money and cigarettes. It’s sad. You know, they lost their lives trying to work, trying to make a living. So, it’s just a is a horrific thing for the whole community,” said one resident.
Greene County deputies said the suspect may have had an accomplice who drove him to the store.
