JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson leaders are asking residents to remain vigilant in light of potentially hazardous weather Thursday night and into Friday. Parts of Mississippi could see a wintry mix during that time.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts an inch to two inches of rain in the Jackson-metro area. However, the area is not expected to see a significant impact since temperatures are forecast to be above or slightly above freezing tonight and early Friday morning. It is unlikely the city will experience any accumulation of sleet, ice or snow that might be dangerous to driver.

The Jackson Police Department (JPD) will monitor major thoroughfares and flood-prone areas.

Temporary Shelter

The city in partnership with Shower Power is managing a temporary shelter at Shepard’s Gym at 1355 Hattiesburg Street (near Jim Hill High School). The shelter has been open to the public since Monday and will be open as long as needed.

Leaders will consider opening an additional shelter depending on turnout. Residents are advised to refer those without heat or home to the shelter for warmth. Food and cots are available. JPD is providing 24-hour security both inside and outside the shelter.

The shelter could also use donations such as coffee, snacks and food items. For more information, please call 601-960-11 or email info@showerpower.ms.
