JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Temperatures are expected to get dangerously low in Central Mississippi in the coming days.
The City of Jackson is partnering with multiple organizations, including Shower Power and Luke Wooten Ministries, to help people escape the cold. They’re asking for people to donate items, so they can provide for as many people as possible. Some of the items needed include toiletries, hygiene items and food.
“Cots, pillows, blankets, coffee, creamer, snacks, fruits, such as oranges and bananas. We’ll also accept clothing items, but the only type will be men and women’s underwear, T-shirts and socks. Monetary donations can be made directly to Shower Power,” said Chris Gray, with the City of Jackson Constituent Services.
The shelter at Champion Gym will be open to anyone who’s looking to escape the winter weather. During operating hours, the shelter will offer showers, three meals a day, snacks, activities, overnight arrangements and 24-hour police presence.
“The City of Jackson cannot do it alone. And so therefore, we have to reach out to our community, supporters and organizations in times of needs like this,” said Gray.
Officials are asking that donations be dropped off or accounted for by Friday, January 17.
