JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A man has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed a bystander and led authorities on a chase from Jackson to Ridgeland.
Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said Capitol police responded to a report of an armed carjacking and stabbing at a bus station in the 300 block of West Capitol Street just before 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 16.
When officers arrived, a witness stated that the suspect had been acting belligerently toward a security guard, leading the security guard to draw his weapon. The suspect fled from the security guard.
Martin said the suspect, who was identified as 37-year-old Johnathan Versell, stabbed a bystander at the bus station and carjacked a woman. The victim who was stabbed was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) for treatment.
Officer’s located the carjacked vehicle around 7:30 p.m. on Woodrow Wilson Avenue near Medgar Evers Boulevard. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Versell led officers on a multi-jurisdictional chase.
Martin said the chase ended when Versell was arrested without further incident at a Chevron gas station on Rice Road. Versell has been charged with armed carjacking, aggravated assault and felony fleeing.
