JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A rare winter storm brought snow to the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
According to the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), ice has been reported on roadways and bridges in 15 southern counties.
Governor Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) declared a State of Emergency due to the winter weather that’s expected to impact Mississippi this week.
Parts of the state are expected to see prolonged freezing temperatures and winter weather, including snow, freezing rain and ice beginning January 19 and continuing through January 22.
MDOT officials said crews are prepared to respond to winter weather and extreme cold events. They prepared equipment by installing salt spreaders on trucks and making sure all response vehicles are running properly. Crews have stockpiled salt, sand and asphalt slag piles.
On Sunday, January 19, MDOT began operations to treat roadways ahead of the winter storm expected to move into the area early Tuesday.
