One dead in shooting at Mississippi chicken processing company

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – The Jones County coroner identified the deceased as Lorenzo Hawthorne, 21, of Hattiesburg. He was an employee at Southern Hens.

According to the coroner, there was an argument at the company. The coroner said Hawthorne walked out to his truck, grabbed a gun and began firing shots. Hawthorne was allegedly shot by a security guard before he died.

According to Jones County deputies, Hawthorne’s body was found in the front parking lot area of the facility. Investigators said multiple civilian vehicles were struck by his gunfire during his close approach to the plant entrance.


JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – One person was killed during a shooting at a chicken processing company in Jones County.

The shooting occurred at Southern Hens in Moselle around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29.

Jones County Coroner Burl Hall said one man was shot and died at the scene. The man has not been identified.

According to Jones County deputies, there are no injuries reported to employees or emergency responders at the scene. They also said there’s no threat to the community.

Deputies said additional information will be released as the investigation proceeds.
