RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Rankin County deputies seized more than 60 pounds of drugs that were hidden inside a vehicle being hauled by an 18-wheeler.
Investigator Tyler Burnell, with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, said a deputy was traveling on Interstate 20 East near the 68-mile marker around 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 6 when he observed the 18-wheeler that was failing to maintain a single lane of travel.
After conducting a traffic stop and speaking with the driver, the deputy became suspicious of criminal activity. During a search of the vehicles on the 18-wheeler, Burnell said deputies noted anomalies on a silver BMW passenger car.
The 18-wheeler was escorted to a nearby sheriff’s office facility. Investigators discovered that the BMW had been loaded with 42.4 pounds of meth and 20 pounds fentanyl.
At the end of the initial investigation, Burnell said deputies believe that the driver nor the trucking company were aware of the drugs concealed inside of the BMW. The driver was released and has not been charged with any crime at this time.
