JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) said they’re “providing clarification” on the status of the City of Jackson’s Hotel O demolition project.

MDEQ officials said they’re responding to “ongoing claims” by the city that the project is awaiting the agency’s approval.

These claims are inaccurate.

MDEQ has received no response to its notice of deficiencies (via letter dated December 18, 2024) regarding the City of Jackson’s Hotel O demolition. Regulations require that prior to demolition, the building(s) be properly inspected for the presence of asbestos and that any known asbestos hazards be mitigated. MDEQ is still awaiting certification from the city that these regulatory requirements have been satisfied. Asbestos regulations are in place to ensure the safety of the workers and the surrounding community. 

MDEQ will review and respond to this information as soon as it is submitted.

In early January 2025, Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said MDEQ requested asbestos testing for the roof of the building and that this must occur before the city can move forward with their plans to demolish Hotel O.

The eyesore off of I-55 has caused problems for several nearby businesses and residents. From drugs to other illegal activities, Jackson police said the hotel has become a hot spot for crime.
