VIDEO: Tornado touches down near Columbia, 2 injured in Wayne County

COLUMBIA, Miss. (WHLT) – A possible tornado touched down near Columbia, Mississippi, on Wednesday, February 12.

Columbia Mayor Justin McKenzie shared a video of the storm moving near the city Wednesday afternoon.

According to the mayor, at least 20 homes were damaged in the city.

The storm also damaged at least six businesses, including the Beacon Supply Hardware on US 98 in Columbia. According to the Pearl River Valley EPA, 119 customers are without power as of Wednesday evening. Crews are working to restore power.

Storm damage was also reported in Wayne County. According to emergency officials, at least two people were injured during the storm, and at least 10 homes were damaged.

The Wayne County School District will be closed on Thursday, February 13.

According to Dixie Electric, there were widespread outages in Wayne County. Their crews worked overnight to clear debris, assess damage and to begin the restoration process.

At the height of the outages, Dixie Electric reported 1,926 customers were without power. As of Thursday morning, 213 members were without power.

The company said more than 70 poles were broken in the area, and the count is expected to increase as the damage assessments continue. Singing River Electric and two East Mississippi Power Association crews will assist Dixie Electric with the restoration process.
