HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Death investigations are underway after two Hinds County detainees died while being housed at the Tallahatchie Correctional Facility.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said both detainees were housed in the same zone of the Tutwiler facility.
In October 2023, Hinds County closed Pod-A at the Hinds County Detention Center and entered an agreement with CoreCivic to house some of the county’s detainees.
The first detainee was found unresponsive on February 9, 2025. He was identified as Christian Dyre, 24. He was being held on a murder charge for a fatal shooting that occurred in Jackson in July 2020.
The second detainee was found unresponsive on February 13, 2025. The detainee, who was identified as Ulysses Nelson, 24, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased. He was being held on the charges of rape and domestic violence-aggravated assault for an incident that occurred in Jackson in April 2023.
Jones said investigators are awaiting the autopsy and toxicology reports of both Dyre and Nelson to determine how they died. The sheriff said the deaths were suspicious, and contraband was found in the zone of the Tallahatchie Correctional Facility.
