UPDATE:

HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said a deputy has died after being shot on Midway Road in Terry.

He said the deputy, 37-year-old Martin Shields, Jr., was responding to a domestic call for service. According to the sheriff, a male was found deceased inside of the residence.

The sheriff said the person found deceased inside of the home was identified as Eric Brown by MBI agents. His cause of death is under investigation.

Jones said Brown is believed to be the suspect in the death of Shields, and the shooting of Brown’s wife and a female accomplice at the location. The two women are both in stable condition.

According to Jones, Shields had been employed with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for nine months.

“His law enforcement career extends beyond being employed with the HCSO. Prayers for his family, friends and the law enforcement community during this very difficult time,” Jones said.

“Pray for Hinds County this morning! Pray for law enforcement everywhere! Pray for Mississippi!” said Gov. Tate Reeves (R-Miss.).

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said Shields worked at the Jackson Police Department (JPD) from 2017 to 2020.

“In 2019, Deputy Shields was honored with the I AM COJ award for his heroic actions in administering NARCAN to an individual, saving their life. His selflessness and quick thinking that day were a testament to his dedication to the well-being of others. Our hearts go out to Deputy Shields’ family, friends, and fellow officers during this time of profound grief. We stand in solidarity with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office as we mourn this devastating loss,” said Wade.
