MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A DeSoto County inmate was convicted and sentenced for assaulting a jailer by tasing him late last year.
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office says John Riles, who was initially in custody for violating probation related to uttering forgery, tased a jailer on November 14, causing him minor injuries.
The sheriff’s office provided a video of the incident.
Riles was initially facing a 90-day sentence for the probation violation but has since been sentenced to five years due to the assault charge, which is the maximum sentence for the offense.
“Let this sentence serve as a warning to those who assault our officers: we will not go soft on you,” said District Attorney Matthew Barton. “We will always have the back of those who serve and protect our community, and any violence against them will not be tolerated.”
