DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — The DeSoto County deputy injured in a wrong-way crash Tuesday night is out of the hospital and recovering at home.

Deputy Brian Brock, 34, used his department SUV to block a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 269.

According to investigators, Tracy Balton, 54, of Olive Branch, was traveling the wrong way on I-269, reportedly at speeds of over 70 miles per hour, when Deputy Brock decided to stop Balton.

Balton was not injured and has been charged with felony fleeing a law enforcement officer. Her bond has not been set. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 9.

According to MHP, the investigating agency, Tracy Balton was headed southbound in the northbound lane, which would be opposing traffic when the crash happened.

“He made the decision to pull in the path of an oncoming vehicle. The hardest choices require the strongest will,” said Desoto County Sheriff Thomas E. Tuggle, II. “Sadly, he took the brunt of that impact head-on.”

Sheriff Tuggle said that Deputy Brock was positioned near Craft Road and moved onto I-269 to block Balton’s vehicle in a nearly head-on crash that injured the deputy but did not injure Balton.

WREG went to the Olive Branch address listed for Tracy Balton, but no one answered the door. MHP and Desoto County have not said how far Balton traveled in the wrong lane of I-269

The Desoto County Sheriff’s Office lists Brian Brock as a member of the SWAT team and Honor Guard.
