JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson grocery store will soon close its doors. The closure has left many people in the community shocked and disappointed.
On Wednesday, people left with baskets full of items from Grocery Depot in the Belhaven neighborhood, taking advantage of the blowout sale.
The owners, the Roberts Company, said they’re working on selling the remaining inventory. They said all employees at the store will be transferred to another Grocery Depot and two Corner Market stores in Jackson.
Many shoppers said the closure will put a strain on them to travel further for groceries.
“I’m kind of sad, because it’s convenient, especially for the Belhaven resident, that we got to go across North Jackson just to go grocery shopping. So, it’s really sad for mothers like me,” said one shopper.
“We got a lot of elderly people that’s been here, you know, all their lives and retired. And this closest place, convenient,” another shopper said.
Customers hope another grocery store will move into the location.
The former Jitney Jungle 14 at English Village was first built in 1933. It has served as a neighborhood store for most of the 92-year span.
