JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson’s Democratic mayoral candidates were on the campaign trail ahead of the municipal primary runoff election on Tuesday, April 22.

Incumbent Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba and State Senator John Horhn (D-District 26) spent the last few weeks trying to persuade people to show up at the polls again. Runoff elections usually see lower voter turnout compared to the primary.

Both candidates had messages for the voters ahead of the runoff.

“It’s trying to revert back to our our roots, which is a grass roots type of organizing, where we are not afraid to meet people where they are, where we’re not afraid to look people in their face, not only tell them what we’ve done, but listen to their concerns, listen to the things that they want out of their city,” said Lumumba.

“We’re all trying to reacquaint ourselves with old friends and meet new friends. And Ms. Brown is one of my new friends. I already knew Ms. Griffin, but both of them are residents of Presidential Hills community. They’re both concerned about the direction our city is headed,” said Horhn.

There is also a runoff for the Republicans in the Jackson mayoral race. The candidates are Wilfred Beal and Kenneth Gee.

Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The winners will advance to the General Election on June 3, 2025.
