JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson Democratic mayoral candidates spent the day making their final push to get voters to the polls for the 2025 Municipal Primary Runoff Election on Tuesday, April 22.
Incumbent Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said he planned to go by polling locations and monitor the numbers. State Senator John Horhn is hopeful that he will receive a large amount of votes like he did in the primary election.
“We’ve worked hard… haven’t worked harder than any other time in my life during this campaign. So, we’re at ease,” said Horhn.
“Our team has been working hard over the last several weeks. We’ve been phone banking. We’ve been canvasing with in neighborhoods, visiting churches,” said Lumumba.
The winner will advance to the General Election on June 3, 2025.
Voters have called for growth, change and stronger community engagement. They said their decision hinges on who they believe can unite the city and work collaboratively with the City Council and the community.
A majority of the voters are concerned about aging infrastructure, including crumbling roads and ongoing water issues. Others want to see abandoned buildings revitalized, along with more investment in job creation and economic opportunity.
“We work in downtown Jackson, also. It’s great not having to commute in, and what we would like to see is better infrastructure on the streets and not having to dodge potholes and play bumper cars every day,” said Jeff Wheeler, a voter.
Polls will be open until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.
