RICHLAND, Miss. (WJTV) – A man is deceased after shots were allegedly fired at Richland police, authorities said.

According to investigators, officers conducted a traffic stop on a recreational vehicle (RV) on Highway 49 on Thursday, April 24. They said the suspect pulled out a firearm and started shooting at officers, who returned fire.

After a standoff, one person inside the RV was confirmed to be deceased. Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said the person was the suspect.

The Rankin County coroner identified the man as Abdullah Chetin, 77, of Ocala, Florida.

Investigators said an officer, who was responding to the scene, was involved in a traffic accident and is receiving medical attention at a local hospital.

Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the shooting. They will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
