VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – Vicksburg police said a woman was found deceased in a wooded area near a homeless encampment.

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones said they received a call about the incident around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30. She said a homeless individual in the area discovered the body and informed a citizen nearby.

Upon arrival, officers located the body of an unidentified white female who appeared to have been deceased for some time. Jones said the woman was found inside a tent where she had been residing. At this time, there are no signs of foul play.

The case is pending further information from medical authorities.

“We encourage anyone experiencing homelessness, or anyone concerned about someone in need, to contact the local shelters for available support. Resources such as United Way, River City Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army,” said Jones. “Our thoughts are with those affected.”
