JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The demolition of the old Coca-Cola plant on Highway 80 in Jackson has been halted.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said the demolition was paused due to the potential threat of asbestos. There were tests before demolition began, but crews discovered there could be asbestos at the back of the property. Lumumba said crews are conducting additional tests.

“We are excited to remove eyesores long standing eyesores across the city, but we have to make certain that we’re doing it in a safe way. And so once it is rendered safe, then it will continue,” the mayor stated.

He did not provide a timeline for the tests.
