JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson leaders said crime is going down in the capital city.

According to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade, the homicide rate is down about 50%. There have been 22 homicides in Jackson this year as of May 12, 2025. This time last year, there were 44 homicides.

Wade said the drop in homicides is due to the hard work of Jackson police officers. He said 20 of this year’s homicides have been solved.

“Last year when I talked about homicide numbers, I said the first of the year, January 2024, I want to cut the numbers in half. We now see that that pattern, that goal and that vision is now coming to fruition. We’re now getting back in line for a city our size,” the police chief stated.

According to Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba, crime has been trending down in the capital city for the last three years.
