JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson residents were able to hear from some of the candidates who are running to be the next mayor of Jackson.
They filled New Jerusalem Church on Tuesday, May 13 to hear from four of the six candidates who will be on the ballot for the General Election on June 3. The forum served as a way for voters to hear from the candidates about how they would address lingering issues once elected and how their first 100 days in office would look for Jacksonians.
“Well, you hear so much, and it becomes noise after a while. So now, a fresh look and a fresh word from the candidates does help to kind of get people reengaged. I think it’s mainly because people don’t feel that they’re getting anything done, that the politicians are not getting anything done. So, we’re going to have to show people that if you come out and vote, then your vote is going to be worth something,” said Bobby Evans, a Jackson resident.
One topic discussed by the candidates was how they would improve the city’s relationship with state and federal partners. State Senator Sollie B. Norwood (D-District 28) hopes the next mayor will work to grow relationships once elected.
“We want to be able to trust the leadership in the City of Jackson and be held accountable for the funds that’s appropriated to the City of Jackson,” said Norwood.
