LAUREL, Miss. (WHLT) – Laurel police said a 38-year-old woman was arrested after an assault led to another woman’s death.
On June 6, Laurel police, the deputy coroner and concerned family members met in reference to the suspicious death of an elderly woman. They said the woman was taken to South Central Regional Medical Center (SCRMC) on May 29, and she died on May 31.
The Jones County Coroner’s Office was contacted by SCRMC staff. After a preliminary investigation, they forwarded the case to Laurel police.
Police said the death investigation revealed that the victim was assaulted by a family acquaintance, who was identified as Rose Upthagrove.

Upthagrove was arrested on June 9 and charged with one count of second-degree murder. Her initial appearance in court will be held on June 11.
