JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Police are investigating after a shooting left the granddaughter of civil rights leader Dr. John Perkins dead.

According to investigators, the shooting happened at a gas station on Northside Drive in Jackson on Sunday, June 22. Police said Karah Perkins Potter, 23, was not the intended target.

Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard confirmed Karah died from a gunshot wound.

“My sister is a hero. She has always been a sweet person. She has always been a kind person,” said Varah Potter, Karah’s siter.

Karah’s aunt, Elizabeth Perkins, said the family will honor her life with the annual Kara Perkins Potter Sunshine Scholarship, which will go out to graduating seniors who reflect the same light as Karah.

While the Perkins family is supporting others, they’re asking for help themselves, seeking answers in what they’ve called “an unbelievable” situation involving their loved one.

“It’s unbelievable what has happened to her and I. We will not rest until we find out what has happened to our angel,” said Priscilla Perkins, Karah’s aunt.

“We had sent out a news release, which we just went out today, and we’re the first one to interview us about what happened down on the corner of Northside Drive at a gas station that didn’t have any security,” said Joanie Perkins Potter, Karah’s mother.

Capitol police said one arrest has been made in connection to the shooting. The suspect has not been identified.
