LEAKE COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Leake County deputies announced a man was charged with capital murder in connection to the death of a three-month-old.
Leake County Sheriff Randy Atkinson said the sheriff’s office received a call on June 18 about a baby that had fallen off the bed and was not responding. The infant was transported to Baptist Medical Center Leake in Carthage and then to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson.
On June 19, the Leake County Sheriff’s Office was notified by UMMC that there were strong indications that the child’s injuries were due to abuse.
After executing a search warrant on the home, Atkinson said Robert Tanner Pigg, 32, was arrested and charged with capital murder.
“We are currently awaiting autopsy results on the victim. It’s been a tough case to handle. It’s always heartbreaking when any law enforcement has to work cases involving children, especially one this young. It impacts everyone involved and it stays with you,” the sheriff said.
