MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is now in custody after being accused of beating a 71-year-old man to death at a home in Marshall County near Byhalia, Mississippi, on Sunday night.

Jaleyone Young, 28, is charged with first-degree murder. He may also face domestic violence charges for allegedly beating his girlfriend.

Young is already on Federal Probation from a previous charge.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to a domestic-related incident at a home in the 400 block of River Ridge Circle around 9:50 p.m.

A man was found severely beaten at the home along with a woman.

Deputies say it started when a couple was involved in an altercation with one another. When the woman’s 71-year-old father tried to help, the man was accused of beating him to death.

“As far as I know, I know about him from hearing from other people in the community. He lived there for several years, outstanding citizen in that community,” said Kenneth Dickerson, Marshall County, Mississippi.

According to Dickerson, an argument between Young, who was living in the home, and his girlfriend developed over Young’s use of his girlfriend’s vehicle.

He said that Young reportedly hit his girlfriend on her face and body, and then turned on the woman’s father when he tried to intercede.

Dickerson said Young severely beat the 71-year-old in the face and head area, and witnesses say he was choked to death.

The suspect then left the scene on foot before deputies arrived, but was caught several hours later, a few miles away from the incident on Highway 309.

The girlfriend was treated and released from the hospital. WREG reported that no one at the residence wanted to talk about what happened.

This is still an ongoing investigation.
