JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – After a shooting claimed the life of the granddaughter of civil rights leader Dr. John Perkins, she was laid to rest.

The family of Karah Perkins Potter, 23, gathered for her homegoing celebration on July 2.

According to investigators, the shooting happened at a gas station on Northside Drive in Jackson on Sunday, June 22. Police said Potter was not the intended target. Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard confirmed Potter died from a gunshot wound.

Her family is determined to keep her legacy alive.

“The Sunshine Scholarship will just be a continuation of Karah, and the light that she brought into every room, the joy she brought to kids. And so, we hope to pass that on to children, kids who are interested in being with the foundation and getting a chance to be a part of it and get to see everything and just continue in her legacy,” said Shelby Perkins, a family member.

Capitol police said one arrest has been made in connection to the shooting. The suspect has not been identified. Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said the investigation is ongoing and no additional details can be released pending a presentation to a grand jury.
