JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) urged residents to take the deadly flooding in Texas as a serious reminder to prepare for disasters.

Powerful flash floods tore through Texas during the holiday weekend, sweeping away entire campsites and neighborhoods. More than 80 people have died.

In Mississippi, emergency leaders are closely watching the situation and said it should serve as a wake up call.

“We see Texas, and we’re heartbroken about what has happened to them. We ask people to use this as a moment to look at your own home and your own life,” said Scott Simmons, director of External Affairs for MEMA. “What would you do if this type of emergency happened to you? Do you have the supplies? Do you have a disaster supply kit with first aid or things like that? Have you thought about evacuation routes? Where would you go if this type of event happened to you?”

MEMA officials said they have not been called to assist Texas, but their team is ready if the time comes.
