MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The family of an 18-year-old University of Mississippi student who was fatally shot in Cordova over the weekend is seeking answers.
An 18-year-old was pronounced dead after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says five people were shot outside a house in Cordova Saturday night.
SCSO detectives identified the victim as 18-year-old Corey Adams of New Orleans, Louisiana. The University of Mississippi and his former high school have said Adams was a freshman on the college’s football team.
SCSO responded to a scene on Fern Glade Cove in Cordova at 10:14 p.m.
Deputies say five people were injured in the shooting. When deputies arrived at the intersection of Forest Hill-Irene and Walnut Grove, they stopped a car, finding a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Four other men arrived by personal vehicles at area hospitals in non-critical condition.
Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner said at a press conference on Monday that three of the four wounded men have been released from the hospital, and one man is in the hospital.
He said that about a mile down from the home in Fern Glade Cove, detectives found multiple shell casings.
Buckner said, on July 20, when deputies arrived back at the scene to investigate the shooting, they found more than 40 rifle and pistol shell casings on the ground.
He said they believe the party had up to 100 attendees or more.
Corey Adams’ mom said that she appreciates everything that is being done to find out what happened to her son and to get him justice.

“My son was not a bad child,” said the mother. “He lived for football.”
The mother said he just graduated from Edna Karr High School in New Orleans, was soon set to play as a defensive end for the University of Mississippi. He was an all-star, a list of accolades, a major standout on the field.
His mother said her son wanted to enjoy his time off, so he went to a pool party.
“He walked back to the car and was killed. He knew no one,” said Adams’ mother.
“He was not a bad child, my child simply got to this party within 10 minutes, and he was killed– he wasn’t even in the party,” said Adams’ mother.
“I can’t give my son the rest I wanted to give him in life, but the least I can do is give him justice,” said the mother.
“I’m going to live my life by the example he set in me and live my life how wanted, fulfill me dreams for me and him to go to the NFL,” said Adams’ brother.
Adams’ brother said he played alongside Corey for 13 years.
He said the day before Corey was killed they shared a conversation he will never forget.
“I was on the phone with him talking about practice how it’s going and everything went,” said Adams’ brother. “He told me he loved me, he told me I love you kid for the last time and now that he is gone I will never hear his words again.”
Buckner said that over 12 detectives have been assigned to this case, and this case is their top priority.
Buckner said deputies responded to the residence earlier in the day because of a noise complaint call.
One man we spoke to on Sunday, who didn’t want to be identified, says the home where the shooting happened appeared to be hosting a pool party. He says multiple cars lined the street.
“I was watching TV in my living room right here and I heard big shots. Huge shots,” he said. “I thought there was a big attack happening. I told my children just to lie on the ground and turn off all the lights. Definitely, there was a big fear.”
By the time deputies arrived, he says, everyone attending the party was gone.
No one has been arrested. It is unclear if gunfire was exchanged, but detectives are looking for one or more suspects involved in the shooting.
“Anyone near this location has surveillance video, we’re asking to contact our detectives at 901-222-5600,” said Chief Deputy Buckner. “We need to review that footage to find out if there are any pieces of evidence from that camera.”
“We will find the shooter or shooters responsible for this, and we will put them in jail. This family deserves closure, and this family deserves to see the best in Memphis,” said Buckner.
This is an ongoing homicide investigation by SCSO detectives. Anyone with information about this shooting is encouraged to call Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH.
