JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – A man who was hospitalized after being trapped underneath a vehicle in Jones County has died.

Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin said Gary Woodman, 59, was trapped under a vehicle that he was working on, following the failure of a vehicle jack on July 19. The incident happened on Summerland Road in the Hebron community.

When authorities arrived, they found the vehicle was crushing Woodman, and he was not breathing. Hebron Fire & Rescue deployed a battery powered rescue spreader and lifted the vehicle off of the victim.

Emergency services personnel performed CPR on Woodman, and firefighters established a landing zone for Rescue 7 Air Ambulance.

Authorities said Woodman was transported by EMServ to South Central Regional Medical Center (SCRMC) in Laurel. They said he was medically stabilized by Saturday night and was transported by ambulance to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Woodman later died on July 20 due to the injuries he sustained in the incident.

“We pray for the family and friends of Gary Woodman during this time of unimaginable loss,” said Berlin. “It is our hope that God grants comfort and a peace beyond understanding in the difficult days ahead to Gary Woodman’s family and friends. Plus, to the first responders who gave it their all in the rescue effort.”
