JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Jackson is still trying to recover from a water crisis that affected the city’s water system in recent years.

On Wednesday, Jackson Mayor John Horhn addressed issues standing in the way from the Siemens settlement investigation to concerns about the future of the capital city’s water system.

Horhn said the city is cooperating with U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate’s request for documents related to the Siemens settlement. The settlement was made during the Lumumba administration.

Many Jackson residents are frustrated over a $40 availability fee to access water service, and the system is nearly out of money.

“I’ve gone on record with the judge saying that I’m not in favor of a rate increase. The people of Jackson, have suffered enough with the water availability fee. For example just in order to qualify for getting water, you have to pay a $40 availability fee. A lot of residents have a lot of pushback on that. We’ve got to come up with some solutions,” the mayor said.

Horhn said his administration is exploring options to stabilize the water system without putting more burden on residents’ wallets.
