MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former MMA fighter was found guilty on Wednesday after he punched and kicked his 12-year-old son, leaving him with a broken wrist in 2024.
Ricquan Thomas, 42, was found guilty of felony child abuse after a trial that began on Monday.

The district attorney’s office said on July 12 of last year, Thomas, a former MMA fighter in New Mexico, kicked and punched his 12-year-old son in the face, torso, arms, legs, and back.
They said the assault caused Thomas’s child to have bruising, swelling, and a broken wrist when his child fell, and Thomas did not seek medical treatment for his son.
According to reports, the child’s mother, a traveling nurse, was working out of state and contacted Child Protective Services after hearing about the injuries.
The office said CPS removed the child from Thomas’s care until the 12-year-old’s mother could return to Mississippi.
They said the next day, the mother took the child to receive treatment at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
According to the office, in 2024, Thomas had 10 children who did not live with him.
The office said the victim has multiple special needs and was visiting his father for part of the summer after years of estrangement.
Since the incident, Thomas now has 11 children.
The district attorney’s office said Thomas was taken into custody and will be sentenced at a later date.
They said a felony child abuse conviction carries a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of life imprisonment.
The jury acquitted Thomas of a separate charge of child abuse stemming from an additional allegation that he kicked the child.
This case was investigated by the Horn Lake Police Department with assistance from Hearts Child Advocacy Center in Southaven and Child Protective Services.
