Explosion reported at Tangipahoa Parish business: TPSO

ROSELAND, La. (WGNO) — A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for an area of Roseland after a report of an explosion at a business on Friday, Aug. 22.

According to the Louisiana State Police, a chemical release and fire was reported at Smitty’s Supply Inc. in Roseland around 12:50 p.m.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that Highway 51 at Highway 10 in Roseland is closed at this time. Drivers in the area are being advised to take alternate routes.

Tangipahoa Parish Government officials ordered a mandatory evacuation of a one-mile radius of the intersection of Highway 51 and Highway 10 in Roseland.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

LSP officials said off-site air monitoring within the evacuation zone “has not indicated any health concerns at this time, and conditions will continue to be closely monitored throughout the event.”

LSP officials said the fire remains active as of 10 p.m. on Friday.

According to state police, the building has sustained severe damage and cleanup, and recovery will be done by a unified incident command with the LSP, the Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and private contractors.

TPSO officials said more than 35 agencies are responding, including more than 20 fire agencies, eight law enforcement agencies and local, state and national public and private emergency response teams.

Parish officials said the evacuation order remains in effect and a shelter has been opened at the Amite Community Center at 101 W Chestnut St. in Amite.
