JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The House Select Committee on Capital and Metro Revitalization heard from city and local law enforcement leaders on resources they could use from the state.
The committee wanted to hear Jackson Mayor John Horhn’s vision for the capital city and the steps he’s taking to turn things around. The mayor talked about crime, blight and workforce development.
Horhn also explained what he believes it will take for the city to find answers to some of its issues, including homelessness.
“It’s nice to have somebody come in, sit down and talk about what the problems are. Talk about finding possible solutions. Talking about having a partnership with the state. And then also, it’s great knowing that he was in the Senate for 30 some odd years. He knows how this place works. He knows what he can legitimately come and ask for,” said State Rep. Shanda Yates (I-District 64).
“We were happy to have had the invitation. Chairwoman Shanda Yates, I think, is doing a great job, and I think some great legislation is going to come out of this,” said Horhn.
Yates said the biggest area the state can help is to provide the city funding. The committee will have to determine where the money will come from and make sure it’s used wisely.
