JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – Two people are recovering from a road rage shooting in Jones County.
Daiquiri Burton and Mason Sampey were shot on August 17, 2025, on Highway 11 in Ellisville.
Police said Malcolm Lyles cut off a group of bikers. As they passed, one of them hit and broke Lyles’ truck mirror. Burton and Sampey pulled over near Howard Industries where Lyles had stopped. Police said a confrontation turned violence, and Lyles opened fire.
A bullet went through Burton’s hand and into Sampey’s side. Sampey has had three surgeries, which included the removal of his spleen and part of his intestines. He remains hospitalized.
“It definitely could have been handled differently. I think everybody kind of made choices in that situation, and it kind of just all happened so fast. And I think maybe had like the driver not gotten out of his vehicle and like just been irate, which he would have been upset regardless, because it is like damage to your car. I’d be upset, too. But to step out of your vehicle, and you’re already like, it’s already on your mind and that’s how you react. And your reaction is to pull a gun out on people, when we were the only two bikers, like the only two people to stop, to even try and talk to you and figure something out. And it just escalated into a bunch of screaming. And I think maybe had it not been that way, maybe we could have came to a conclusion,” said Burton.
Lyles turned himself in to authorities. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help with Burton and Sampey’s medical expenses.
