Thousands expected for Jackson State football’s season opener

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Jackson is gearing up for an exciting weekend as Jackson State University (JSU) kicks off its 2025 football season.

The Tigers will host Hampton University on August 30, 2025, at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

On Sunday, the stadium will transform for the National Battle of the Bands, featuring 10 powerhouse HBCU marching bands from across the country. The event will include live performances, food trucks and a fan fest.

“You want to make sure that you’re prepared, have those ponchos and make sure that you’re going to the game. You have those clear bags. You don’t want to get turned back around going to your vehicle. Just, you know, check the weather and make sure that you’re that you’re ready for these events,” said Yolanda Clay-Moore, director of External Affairs with Visit Jackson.

Organizers expect thousands of visitors, with hotels and restaurants preparing for a surge in business.

The Battle of the Bands will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Gates will open at 4:00 p.m.
