CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – Leaders with the Canton Public School District announced Canton High School will cancel its tailgating activities for the homecoming game on October 17, 2025.

Officials said the decision was made due to recommendations from the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) after a violent weekend in the state.

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but the safety of everyone remains our top priority. Refunds will be issued to those who purchased spots, and we will contact those individuals,” school district officials said.

MHSAA Executive Director Rickey Neaves recommended that schools end campus tailgating events. In a recent podcast, Neaves provided insight into safety concerns with high school athletic events in Mississippi, especially those that have alcohol and other related substances at tailgates.
