JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson leaders are working to keep stability in the Jackson Police Department (JPD). Jackson Mayor John Horhn said Interim Police Chief Tyree Jones, who is the Hinds County sheriff, could remain in his role longer as the city continues to search for a new chief.
Jones stepped into the position earlier this year, following the resignation of former Chief Joseph Wade. State law limits interim appointments to 90 days, unless a candidate is confirmed by the City Council.
Horhn said Jones has agreed to move forward with the confirmation process, which would let him serve as the capital city’s police chief until a new chief is chosen. The mayor said the hiring timeline was pushed back due to budget delays that affect when the search committee could be formed.
“We were not able to even hire the search committee until after the fiscal year started, because we didn’t have any money come up. It was full. So, that set us back really up about six weeks. And so, we’re just trying to for manage the issue within the law as best we can,” Horhn stated.
The mayor hopes to finalize the process soon.
“I want to be clear: I am not a candidate or applicant for the permanent position of Chief of Police. My commitment remains steadfast—to lead with integrity, uphold public safety, and support the department with sustainability and professionalism,” said Jones. “I fully support the Mayor’s ongoing efforts to conduct a transparent and thorough search for a permanent Chief of Police, a process I believe will reach its conclusion in the very near future.”
Without confirmation, Jones’ interim appointment would end in early December.
